Napolitano vetoes the hope for real Border Security while Basham bashes the desires of Arizonans

PHOENIX – Don Goldwater today called upon Arizona Governor to immediately implement a plan that will actually protect Arizonans from the illegal invasion of our state. The people of Arizona have been told for weeks by our governor that we should not implement initiatives to protect Arizonans from the illegal invasion across our southern border. Arizonans have been told that this is a federal government responsibility.

The general tone of the media blitz has been, “Hi, I am from the government and I am here to help you.” This has been a point of humor for decades, however, Arizonans are not laughing. The administration’s position on the illegal invasion reminds one of the movie, Home Alone 2. To paraphrase, the mother asks the hotel employee “What kind of idiots do you have working for you?” The hotel employee responded, “The finest in the world.”

The new commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, W. Ralph Basham (who owes his job and works at the pleasure of the President), parroted the administration position by stating that he doesn't support a border-wide wall. Mr. Basham stated, "What did it take the Chinese to build a wall, 300 years? I don't think we've got that kind of time." He proceeded to praise the Border Patrol for rescuing illegals from the desert, instead of being able to praise them for doing their job of patrolling the border and protecting the sovereignty of our state.

Goldwater stated he was appalled when Mr. Basham called the administration plan to use the National Guard to repair vehicles and perform other tasks “a brilliant stroke.” The only stroke to this outrageous policy is the coronary stroke it is creating in Arizonans. Minutemen and patriots like Rep. Russell Pearce and Congressman Tom Tancredo have advocated the use of the National Guard to help secure our borders for years. Of course, their idea was that the National Guard should actually Guard the Nation, not serve as EMT’s.

We learned in the last two days that Arizonans have no real hope that the federal government will protect their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness anytime in the near future. Monday, Congressman John Boehner stated, after meeting with House Speaker Dennis Hastert, that the chances of passing a federal bill to deal with the illegal invasion was “practically nil for this year.” Today the Washington Times reports the following

Hastert doubts alien bill in 2006

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
June 21, 2006 House leaders cast doubt yesterday on the possibility of passing immigration reform legislation this year and said, in an unusual move, they will hold hearings across the country to gauge voter concern. "I'm not putting any timeline .. but I think we need to get this thing done right," House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, Illinois Republican, told reporters yesterday after meeting with the chairmen of all the committees that oversee immigration-related legislation. Aides in both the House and Senate said yesterday the developments mean immigration legislation is essentially dead for the year.

Goldwater stated, “Governor, it’s time for real leadership from your office on this issue instead of press conferences and emergency proclamations that do nothing to protect the property and public safety of Arizonans. Governor, it’s time to cease and desist from your pandering to the illegal alien community for personal political purposes. Governor, it’s time to use your authority as Commander-in-Chief of our state military forces and enforce current laws. Governor, it’s time for you to tell Arizona cities that you will no longer countenance their “Sanctuary City” policies. Governor, it’s time to build a 65-foot wall to make their 51-foot ladders unusable.”

Goldwater concluded, “Governor, it’s time to take your Oath of Office seriously to ‘support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the State of Arizona, and bear true faith and allegiance to the same and defend them against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’ Governor, if you cannot keep your Oath of Office, it’s time for you to serve the people of Arizona by resigning your office so someone else can do so.”
